Can I play lottery games online in Florida?

Currently, no online lottery games are available in Florida. The state has yet to legalize full-fledged iLottery games via a lottery-sanctioned app. Even lottery courier services, which are making waves in other states, have yet to make their way south to Florida.

In early September 2024, courier service theLotter announced its launch in Florida. However, that launch was short-lived, and theLotter quickly paused its operations in the state. The operator pulled out to make adjustments to its model so it could offer its courier service in accordance with the Florida Lottery’s policies. As of this writing, theLotter has yet to relaunch in Florida.

Despite the tumultuous early days of Florida online courier services, this could be viewed as a positive development. While theLotter figures out how to comply with the Florida Lottery’s regulations, it could pave the way for additional couriers to make their way into the state.

The Florida Lottery reported a 3.9% decrease in revenue during fiscal year 2024. In the digital age, dips in profits often open up new opportunities for revenue streams. Should revenue continue to decrease, we could see Florida push for online lottery games to become legal. This is all speculation for now, but we will keep an eye out for any legislative movement.

Lottery games in Florida

Here are the lottery games you can play in Florida.

Powerball

Powerball is one of the best-known draw games in any state, including Florida. Players pick six numbers, including a single Powerball, in search of a jackpot or smaller prizes for matching fewer numbers. Florida Lottery players can pick numbers manually or use Quick Pick for random selections.

Florida sold its first Powerball ticket on January 4, 2009. In the intervening 15 years, Florida has seen its fair share of jackpot winners. In May 2024, one lucky Powerball player in Miami nabbed a cool $100+ million payday with a Quick Pick ticket.

Mega Millions

Mega Millions is the other major draw game that has become a household name in Florida and across the country. It has seen massive jackpots in excess of $1 billion, thus its widespread popularity among lottery players.

Florida was a latecomer to Mega Millions ticket sales. The Sunshine State started offering Mega Millions tickets on May 15, 2013. Florida players have won two major jackpots in the past few years. The first was on August 8, 2023 in Miami. The jackpot exceeded $1.58 billion, and the player chose the cash option for about $794 million. The second was just a week later, on August 15, 2023. The winning ticket was sold at a Publix in Jacksonville, but the prize went unclaimed, and the ticket expired.

Other draw games in Florida

Beyond Mega Millions and Powerball, Florida has a slew of additional draw games with tickets available at hundreds of retailers. They are:

  • Florida Lotto X With Double Play
  • Cash 4 Life
  • Jackpot Triple Play With Combo
  • Cash Pop
  • Fantasy 5 with EZ Match
  • Pick 5 Plus Fireball
  • Pick 4 Plus Fireball
  • Pick 3 Plus Fireball
  • Pick 2 Plus Fireball

Each game has its own structure, prize pool, and drawing schedule.

Scratchers

The Florida Lottery hosts 99 scratch games at the time of writing. Occasionally, new ones make their way to the state, while others are retired after their major prizes are doled out. Among our favorites are:

  • The Cash Wheel
  • Find the 7s
  • Monopoly Secret Vault

Florida Lottery payment options

Florida lottery retailers have different restrictions on payment methods. For the most part, cash is the widely accepted option. Publix, one of the biggest Florida grocery chains, only accepts cash for lottery purchases. Debit cards are accepted at some retailers, but each partner can decide whether or not to accept them.

Some retailers allow players to use a credit card or Apple Pay with a purchase of goods and services in excess of $20. Check with your retailer before heading their way to confirm you can buy tickets with a credit card.

It’s worth noting that Florida law doesn’t outright prohibit credit card purchases. The law simply stipulates that you can only buy lottery tickets via credit when combined with a purchase of $20 or more for other services, such as groceries.

Responsible gambling

The Florida Lottery is a form of gambling, so it’s crucial to keep responsible play in mind. The Florida Lottery has a “Play Responsibly” page, which serves as a hub for players. The page includes various resources for Floridians, including tips on playing responsibly and links to outreach programs.
